In November 2024, the picturesque coastal city of Coffs Harbour hosted a Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme engagement event for workers, employers and community stakeholders in the region.
Timed for the peak berry season, the event was designed to establish stronger, more collaborative links among key program stakeholders, with a focus on supporting PALM scheme workers’ welfare and wellbeing and integration into the local community.
The day's activities revolved around key PALM scheme goals: supporting and informing workers, connecting them with their local community, and strengthening relationships to foster ongoing collaboration and support.
A cultural welcome and engaging discussions
The event opened with a smoking ceremony and heartfelt Welcome to Country, which led into a faith service. These cultural protocols set the respectful tone for the day, which was further enriched by ni-Vanuatu and Fijian workers performing hymns and an impromptu traditional dance performed by ni-Vanuatu workers.
The day featured interactive discussions and activities that encouraged workers to share their aspirations and challenges. Through storytelling, art and language, they described their hopes to:
- build homes and purchase land
- support families financially
- start or expand businesses
- achieve financial stability
- pursue personal growth.
Community stakeholders and employers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting workers to achieve their goals. Themes of collaboration, open communication and targeted outreach were central to their feedback.
The day concluded with a talanoa session, where one worker shared a personal message with the group:
"It's important for us to remember that while we are here to work and support our families back home, we are also doing this for our country. The money we send back will also help to build new roads, schools and hospitals. Remember - all the hard work we do here is not just for our loved ones but for the progress of our nation."
Strengthening the PALM scheme community
The Coffs Harbour gathering emphasised the importance of fostering meaningful connections between workers, employers and the local community.
Through sharing aspirations, identifying challenges and collaborating on solutions, the event served as a foundation for stronger, more inclusive local connections in the Coffs Harbour area.
Looking ahead, the Australian Government is committed to building on these insights to continue to strengthen the PALM scheme and its ongoing support for worker welfare.
Events like these are crucial in ensuring the wellbeing, integration and positive experience of PALM scheme workers while strengthening ties with the communities they contribute to so significantly. A piece of feedback from the event perfectly captured this sentiment:
“We are all incredibly blessed to know that you [DEWR] are overseeing each of the nations and to equip PALM scheme workers on their journey, not only for their future but for their nations and the impact on this nation.”
